📱Install Android Auto / Waze on R-Link 1

January 5th, 2024
Important update to do for the R-Link 1: see this page.
The handling below may irreparably damage your vehicle, if you are not sure what you are doing do not do the handling. The site can not be held responsible.
This manipulation is a hack, it is not official, you can not get help from Renault if it goes wrong. Moreover on the R-Link 1, the USB socket does not deliver enough power, it can cause bugs.
Why the first R-Link 1 are not compatible with Android Auto? R-Link 1 was introduced in 2012, at that time neither Android Auto nor Carplay existed since they were presented in June 2013 and 2014. But whether it’s Google or Apple, there are hardware requirements that are imposed on car manufacturers. It was therefore not possible for Renault to integrate and deploy them on the first versions. It was therefore necessary that Renault slightly change its hardware on the R-Link 1 released in 2017 knowing that the validation of the evolutions is a process much heavier in the automobile than in the world of the smartphone for example in particular because there is security issues. . This explains that even if it’s frustrating I grant you

Internet is incredible, smart guys have found a way to install Android Auto on all Renault R-Link 1 marketed even the first. As it’s a little mess on the web, so I compiled all the info. No need to ask your garage Renault to do so, its computer equipment is not able to activate the function.

Interested? follow the guide!

To enable smartphone replication (Android Auto / Apple Carplay) on R-Link 1 there are some prerequisites:

  • Own the latest software version of R-Link 1 ( see this page )
  • Have an ELM interface (all are not compatible, those are recommended) with the 25k80 chip.
    • USB one (I tested)
    • You can also take a wireless one (I have not tested personally) which will allow later use with a smartphone:

  • Download the DDT4all software ( click here ), an open source program made by an enthusiast. see his website )
  • Find a recent DDT2000 database (it’s up to you)
  • Modify an ODB extension like this one (the wires are apparent and easily modifiable):

The very first thing to do is to modify the ODB extension. Why? The interface is made to work on the classic CAN of the vehicle so pins 6 and 14. But the calculator of R-Link 1 is on a secondary CAN (12 and 13).

So you have to change the extension to get the following situation:

  • pin 6 ELM side to pin 13 OBD side
  • pin 14 ELM side to pin 12 OBD side

Once all this is done let’s start.

Install the DDT4all application on your computer.

Download and install the drivers for the interface ( see this page ). On Windows 8 and 10, you may use this method to install the drivers.

Copy the DDT2000 database to the C: \ Program Files (x86) \ ddt4all directory.

Start DDT4all and check that the interface (connected) is detected by appearing on the first window.

If the interface appears well, you can go to the vehicle and connect the probe to the ODB socket of the vehicle using the extension . To find out where your ODB socket is, you can visit this site.

Select your interface, check the box as you are aware that you should not do anything and select “connected mode”.

Activate the Expert mode (Einstein icon at the top), then select the after sales mode from the drop-down menu.

  • Select your vehicle.
  • Choose MFD 4.6
  • Choose from Screens: 13 – ECU configuration ADAS. ..
  • Choose the Screen tab at the top.

On the main screen choose the following options:

  • SPVR for iPhone: Present (to use SIRI with a long press on the voice command button just in Bluetooth even if you do not have Carplay)
  • Android Auto feature: Present
  • Mirror Link feature: Not Present
  • MW activation: Not Present (if you want to disable these radio bands so that they do not appear anymore)
  • LW activation: Not Present (if you want to disable these radio bands so that they do not appear anymore)
  • SPVR for others Phones: Present (to get the Google Voice Assistant just in Bluetooth even without plugging in and running Android Auto).

Then you just have to click on WRITE ECU Config (the big yellow button) at the end of the modified lines.

On the lower part you will see the frames of writing scroll. Once that’s good you can restart the R-Link 1 by pressing the Home button 5 times.

The feature is now activated! You can benefit from Google Maps, Waze directly on R-Link 1.

Here’s what it makes in a Megane 3.

Note that the Joystick is perfectly taken into account just as shortcuts Maps / Audio / Phone …

However, USB plugs do not provide enough power to charge the phone, so some phones may discharge slightly. The discharge is more pronounced when using Android Auto in the foreground than in the background. For example using Deezer via Android Auto and the classic navigation of the R-Link I noticed that it worked well!

To use the voice command of Android Auto, it will be necessary to make a long press on the button. She is damn good.

This is a manipulation that offers new possibilities to R-Link 1! I adopted it on my Mégane 3, and use it daily for Deezer!

Enjoy! ??

Thank you so much for this article. Do you have a picture of modified OBD extension or a more detailed explanation on the whole process for doing that?

    • I wish they did – 3 years later and I’m about to try this on a 2016 Renault Twingo Mk 3 – if anyone out there is still reading this – please show me!!

      • I’m reading it just now, as I have a 2015 Twingo Mk3 and was thinking the same thing.. looks a bit complicated tbh

        • Well, took me a while but I bit the bullet, downloaded the software and purchased the cables etc. Took my time and double checked the cables were correct and tried it out but nothing worked – everything looked ok but after pressing Write ECU nothing – after lots of googling – turns out I needed to change the response time, so changed it to the higest figure . . . .

Result = Android Auto in my Twingo 2016 Mk3

Thanks to everyone and especially this website!

  • I’m curious if you’ve tried the SPVR for iPhone option. I’ve enabled it but the voice button doesn’t activate Siri, but if I press and hold the button on the iPhone it does activate as if expect.

  • Hey Sergiu,
I’m yet to do it, but have just bought on ebay:
16 Pin OBD2 Male To Female extension cable – 30cm length

I plan on just splicing the 2 wires that need changing – seems like the easiest option to me.

would it not be an option to use an Y-cable for usb power (just like you would use for a portable hard drive) to add power from a 12 v charger?

    • This is what I’ve done – works a treat . . . .

    • Somehow it worked for me without any issue. Connection is quick and stable, never had any hiccups yet. The phone (SM-G981U1) is charging, albeit slowly, never seen discharge or anything similar. Car is a 2014 Laguna Initiale Paris.

  • Hi I have followed the guide step by step, I have rewired an extention cable (soldering etc) and did pin by pin continuity testing to ensure that the cables are connected correctly and I cannot enable android auto on my head unit….

I can see the settings and change them and write them on DDT4all but the settings will not get written…. Not sure what I am doing wrong…. I have tried with the RLINK unit on & off – no difference and I cannot think of anything else to do…

    Any ideas?

    • Have you tried maxing out the can timeout response – (bottom right on DDT4ALL?) That worked for me

  • All I am getting back is:

    ECU uses SDS 10C0
    Sending request :StartAfterSalesSession
    Delay 50 ms
Switching to session mode 10 C0
    Sending request :DataWrite.ECU
    Delay 250 ms
    Sending ELM request:2E 6C 1C E4
    ELM response :
    Sending request :StartDiagnosticSession
    Delay 250 ms
Switching to session mode 10 81

And nothing happens… Could you please let me know if anyone has seen similar behaviour from the RLINK1 head unit? Any ideas….

    • I have the exact same problem. Also, the DDT4All tool shows NO DATA in the right purple column so maybe it cannot read the RLink? Did you manage to get it fixed?

      • I have the same issue.

        • Try another cable, that helps me

            HELP !
            et d’avance merci

          • Hy Guys,

I have the same problem, Anyone solved it?

            Thanks

    • I got this error when i used the wrong pins (i had to exchange pin 12 and 13 because i looked at the wrong side of the plug)

    • Change Can timeout to max . . .

  • Hello,

I was wondering if this ‘hack’ fully enables CarPlay for iPhone or does it only support the Siri voice control?

How did you update the R-Link1? I have only 11.342.2681682-8046

  • Hi, I tried it with the advertised obd usb connector (ordered over amazon.de). I also rewired the extension (tested the connections with a line tester). When trying to run the Write ECU Config I get the following error messages:

    Sending request :DataWrite.ECU
    Delay 250 ms
    Sending ELM request:2E 6C 1C E4
Bad ELM response : WRONG RESPONSE CFC0 Unknown
ELM response : WRONG RESPONSE CFC0 Unknown
    Sending request :StartDiagnosticSession
    Delay 250 ms
Switching to session mode 10 81
Bad ELM response : WRONG RESPONSE CFC0 Unknown

It keeps repeating the Bad ELM response line.

Also tried the ELM benchmark from the ddt4all launch window which resulted in the all tests failing.

    Incompatible adapter on ARM core
    Result: 0 succeeded from 95
    ELM Max version:

Did I maybe just get a bad OBD to USB connector or am I doing something wrong?

  • Hi guys! Recently I succesfully activated Android Auto on Rlink1. If you have android phone, download app ELM327 identifier, connect phone to OBD (you have to plug it into car socket) and run app. It will show you which commands are supported. I was able to succesfully operate within ddt4all with module, which supports all commands from v1.0 to 1.4 of ELM327. I had also several others which I was not succesful with. They supported only few of commands (usually acceptable for classic dashboard screen).

  • Followed the procedure, and… THA DHAAA! worked, thanks for sharing. The challenge i have is that i can only connect via MirrorLink but not on Android Car! tried different phones (different android versions) all are sporting the same behaviour. Any idea?
    Thanks,
    Serban

I own a Renault Clio IV 2018 model but it came with Media Nav Evolution 9.1.3. Can the procedure described above been applyed on Media Nav or is it only for R-Link cars? Thanks a lot.

  • Hola buenas, genial trabajo. Mi problema es el siguiente. Tengo sxenic 2014 y rlink 11.342.

How to activate in medianav classic

  • Nicolas

Does anybody know how to activate the rear camera into DDT4all? Thanks.

    • Yes. In DDT4All follow the same procedure abouve, but in the frame action select screen “12-ECU Configuration – Radio, Audio, Rear Camera & Gyro”. In this screen go to the part “REAR CAMERA” and change the value of fields “Disable RVC” (2nd field) and “Rear View Camera” (3rd field) to the value “fitted”. In Fluence Dynamic Plus there is the cable (with 4 wires) already available to connect the camera in the boot tamp connected in a fake connector. The original camera is 6v, but a 12v universal rear camera worked for me connecting the power + (red) and power (black) – wires in the rear lamp and the sinal + (yellow) and signal – (brown) are connected to the camera signal wires. Without this cable already installed you must to find the signal + and – wires in the R-link “Multi Function Display” or in the Radio unit.

  • I have a Megane 3 2015 1.2 Tce B95 and on the latest Rlink1 11.2344.3064886 fireware.
Having major troubles finding the right ECU. Namely MFD 4.6 (This only shows in a old 2017 DDT2000DB version)
Has any one got the DDT2000 and working link? I have downloaded various versions from 2017 / 2018 and “Ultimate” version. But the MFD is usually 4.1 4.3 5.1 5.2 and when ECu is scanned its never found / matched using DDT4All.

    • @slgn, Did you rework this wire somehow? According to the instructions? Or is the switch on the plug enough?

  • Thank you smart guys! It works in a Fluence Privilege 2015 R-Link 1 (sofware updated to version 13.44). I used an adapter with PICI8F25K80 and CP2102 chip (Aliexpress: Mini Vgate elm327 v2.1 USB OBDII). The tests in DDT4All indicates it is compliant from version 1 to 1.4 (few commands of 1.5 not worked, but it was enought). rlink1 rear camera activation issue solve. DDT4All x95 megane-scenic MFD v5.2 —> Navigation mfd v5.2 ecu configration radio use restrictions video The important thing here is to press the house mark on the tape 5 times after sending the command.

    • Hi Muzaffer,
can you check the signal wire (+) from reversing camera on which pin is connected to Rlink?

  • Hello everybody.
i was wondering if it is possible to find something like a manual that explain all the different options on ddt4all.

also, i’ve activated AA but is not working with my phone. 🙁
    that’s a bummer….

    Renault Grand Scenic III-2014

  • I tied to do this but without any result. I swapped pins 6 and 14 in my ELM USB diagnostic tool. I have also loaded database. After I run DDT4ALL, there is a green window at the bottom of the screen saying “Connected”. The problem is that I am not able to run expert mode. Any idea where is the problem?

  • Do you need to connect all the other pins or is it enough to just use CAN High and CAN Low? I have a USB CAN Interface and I thought about just crimping two wires and connect them to Pin 12 and 13 – without the need to buy a new OBD Interface, Adapter cables etc.

I assume this is Android only and carplay cannot be activated?

  • Worked like a charm on my 2016 R240

  • After many many attempts, I was finally successful with this today on a 2016 Megane III GT Line Premium. I would say the biggest obstacle was rearranging the wires on the OBD extension – the diagram on this page I found is a little misleading; the pins are numbered differently so make sure you look inside the rim of your OBD extension and your ELM adaptor to see if the pins are numbered. Once I worked that out, things started to connect – however I had the ‘No Data’ issue that many people have had. This issue is because I had a cheap (fake) ELM – I had several of them until I finally spent a little more and ordered through a supplier with a guarantee that it was a genuine 25k80 chip.

gracias por tu experiencia y compartirla, saludos!

  • Clio IV-2016 and it is working great; thanks for the tutorial. Indeed you have to be careful with the rewiring: look inside the car-connector (the male one) and you’ll see the pin-numbering.
Another way of looking at it: the above pictured ODB II connector is the connector of your car 🙂 (and so: also the female connector of your extention cable).
Than it just didnt work. trying and trying; the solution was easy. Some options you have to select & (double) click to get them working. And it’s slow, so be patient: it’s a serial connection.

But older DDT4ALL version (Realase November 2018) worked like a charm! I am on Windows 11, not sure if it had anything to do with it.

Hi. It worked, the “hack”. My Android device recognise Android Auto. The connection is ok. But the sharing part, is black. I see the “popup” screen in de car, but nothing is showed. When i click on the screen, i hear sounds on de Android Device. Someone else also had this problem? Or is it something with LineaOs?

  • I tried it on my Clio IV 2013 and i get no errors but it does not seem to write the changes to the Rlink 1. Tried both a cabled obd2 unit and a wifi obd2 unit, still no luck at writing the changes to activate android play. Current version of Rlink application is 11.346.

The OBDII units i tried are as follows:

    1. DollaTek V1.5 bluetooth WIFI Scanner Auto OBDII Diagnostic Tool Code Reader PIC18F25K80 Chip
    2. EVGATSAUTO 150CM OBD2 USB Cable Scanner, Car OBD2 409.1 USB Cable Scan Tool.

Any advice would be great . TIA

    • UPDATE!!

I managed to find out why it was not writing the config, i went over the wires on the OBD extension and found one of the swapped wires was not sitting properly in the casing. After making sure it was snug and tight i tried again to write the config and it worked enabling the auto android. All is working perfect now, i used the wifi OBDII unit to perform the changes.
