Kelec is an application developed by Kelyan Pegeot Selme, a young computer science student. His journey began in 2021, when his mother acquired a Renault Zoe. Faced with a disappointing experience with the official My Renault app, which was slow to open and often prone to crashes, Kelyan felt a crucial shortcoming: the impossibility of adding a widget to his smartphone’s home page.

To overcome this problem, Kelyan decided to create his own application, originally designed for his personal use in March 2023. A few months later, he opened Kelec to a public beta, allowing other users to take advantage of its features.

Kelec relies on Renault’s official APIs, although these are not officially documented. However, thanks to the efforts of the community, which had already explored these tools for home automation integrations, Kelyan was able to connect its application to Renault servers. To date, Kelec has around 50,000 active users every day, testifying to its growing success.

Kelec stands out for its minimalist, functional approach. Open source, free of charge, with no ads or trackers, it offers all functionalities directly accessible from the home page. The Kelec application does not prevent you from paying a subscription fee to benefit from the services and remote control of your electric vehicle when the one offered with the purchase of a new vehicle has expired (3 or 5 years).

Equivalent functions to the official application :

  • Vehicle mileage (but available right from the home page)
  • Autonomy and percentage of battery charge.
  • Remote pre-conditioning can be activated.
  • Vehicle location (directly on home page).

Additional functions compared to the official application:

  • Opening speed
  • Remaining battery capacity (in kWh)
  • Maximum range if battery charged to 100%.
  • Estimated charging power! πŸ₯³
  • Widget on smartphone home page πŸ₯³
  • Apple Watch support. ⌚
  • Super cool charging history display (with average power for each charging session).

Future features Kelyan would like to eventually integrate into Kelec (no date announced and it may not be technically possible):

  • Support for Android smartwatches
  • Tracking of charging costs
  • Remote control of headlights and horn for compatible vehicles.

Since I’ve been using it, I’ve had zero crashes, it’s almost flawless. Surprisingly, when the official app doesn’t work, Kelec works like a charm!

If you own a Renault or Dacia electric vehicle, it’s worth a try!
