End of 2G/3G: what impact on Renault Dacia vehicles?

Mobile operators are gradually switching off 2G and 3G across Europe. First-generation Zoe (phase 1) cars are the most affected.

  • Zoe phase 1: 2G connection. Charging and preconditioning control from My Renault goes away where 2G is switched off. Renault has announced nothing about an upgrade.
  • R-Link 1 and R-Link 2: services had already expired since the Store closed on 31 August 2024.
  • Easy Link and OpenR Link: 4G connection, no impact.
  • eCall: affected only where neither 2G nor 3G remains available, country by country.
  • New vehicles: NG eCall (4G/5G) is mandatory for those built from 1 January 2027.

The calendar across Europe

There is no common European date. Each operator sets its own calendar, and Renault says connected services keep working where 2G is still available. As of September 2026, in the main countries:

Zoe phase 1: the biggest impact

The Zoe phase 1 (R-Link Evolution) connects over 2G. Where 2G is switched off, charging and preconditioning control from My Renault goes away, along with scheduling from the on-board system. To manage charging, you will now have to go through the charging point, for example with an off-peak/peak hours contactor.

The car drives and charges normally, and navigation, Android Auto and SD card map updates are not affected. In practice, the services had already expired: the Store closed on 31 August 2024, with no renewal possible. Renault has announced nothing about a possible upgrade.

R-Link 1 and R-Link 2

Their services (traffic info, Coyote…) had already expired when the Store closed in summer 2024, with no renewal possible.

Easy Link, OpenR Link, MediaNav Live: no impact

Easy Link and OpenR Link use 4G: no impact. Renault Group says the same for Dacia, Alpine and Mobilize.

The eCall emergency call: from 2G/3G to 4G/5G

Recent Renault cars (since 2018) have an eCall system, with an SOS button on the overhead console.

On vehicles built up to the end of 2025, it works over 2G or 3G. It only stops working where neither network is available, which will happen country by country as operators complete their shutdowns. When that happens, the green eCall light will no longer come on and eCall will no longer be operational. However, there is nothing to worry about for the periodic technical inspection (contrôle technique).

Vehicles built from 1 January 2027 must have the new generation of eCall, which works over 4G/5G.

According to our information, Renault/Dacia are starting to roll it out across their range.

United Kingdom: Renault says its current eCall is 2G/3G. A UK government update of 29 July 2026 on the new 4G/5G eCall refers to a delay in 4G/5G network availability until March 2027. Where 4G/5G networks are not available, new Renault cars built with 4G/5G eCall will be able to use 2G/3G networks.
